Are All Braces The Same?

Last Updated: Aug 04, 2026

Most parents view braces as a rite of passage from childhood to adulthood, but haven’t thought much about them since having their own. While all braces lead to straightened teeth and correct bite alignment, the four main types of braces present different cosmetic and functional options.

All braces are fixed appliances that are bonded onto teeth to allow their efficient movement. Braces consist of different types of brackets, wires, and ligatures. A bracket acts like a handle on a tooth and applies force through wires to move the tooth into its perfect position.

The latest orthodontic braces technologies aim for faster tooth movement, patient comfort, and a minimally visible appliance. Many types of braces are available in the market with different designs, benefits, and drawbacks. You may have a preference towards one or another, however the final decision will come down to best suitability for your smile.

Metal Braces

Metal braces are the most commonly used type of braces available. With this more traditional option, the metal brackets are glued to the front side of the teeth, and a wire feeds through those brackets.

At different stages, certain pressures are applied and reinforced with elastic bands for bite alignment or, if needed, stronger reinforcement to close gaps with power chain elastics.

If your child gets metal braces, you can expect to visit the orthodontist every 8 to 10 weeks to change the wire and keep the teeth moving into their perfect positions. And at each appointment there’s the option to change the coloured bands that go around the brackets, to give braces a personalised look. Check out our colour picking tool.

Ceramic Braces

Ceramic braces are very similar to traditional metal braces in their overall design and mechanics, but they offer a more cosmetic appearance. Instead of metal, the brackets are ceramic, resin, or plastic materials that match the natural color of the teeth.

Just like metal braces, ceramic braces require a routine appointment every 8 to 10 weeks for adjustments.

Choosing The Right Braces For Your Child

The decision of which braces are right for your child is best made in consultation with your orthodontist. Your orthodontist can recommend which type of braces will better suit your child based on your specific goals and current circumstances. Your treatment coordinator will be able to explain the treatment plan and what’s involved throughout your braces journey.

If you would like to book an initial consultation for your child, appointments for under-18s are free. Request a booking today!
