When braces come off, it’s your turn to shine. Confident smile, good feelings, a new you.
However, beautiful teeth are always a work in progress. That means retention - having a retainer after your straightening treatment - is a vital step for maintaining your investment.
Clinical research indicates that regardless of how successful treatment has been, teeth will continue to move throughout life. Tooth movement is evident as crowding of front teeth, making it necessary to wear a retainer to keep teeth in correct alignment.
Once straightening treatment is completed, your orthodontist will speak with you about the retainer option that suits you best. The most common retainer used for lower teeth is a thin wire bonded to the front six teeth (known as a bonded lingual retainer). Retention for upper teeth is often provided by a clear plastic overlay retainer.
Traditional metal braces are the fastest, most popular, and cost-effective orthodontic treatment available. Made of tiny metal brackets bonded to the surface of each tooth, metal braces have strong, thin archwires that sit in bracket slots. Held in place by small coloured rubber rings, these rings are changed at every appointment.
Brackets work like the railroad ties that hold a train track in place. If brackets aren’t glued to teeth, they may be attached to a metal band that fits around your tooth like a belt. Bands are often placed on back molars.
Clear braces work on the same principles as metal braces but are not as visible. They are more visually appealing and many patients who choose this option feel more confident about treatment.
Lingual braces are customised to fit behind each tooth and are not visible. They are suitable for most orthodontic cases but may require a longer treatment time.
Invisalign treatment involves wearing a series of customised clear removable retainers. This is a popular option amongst adults as they can be removed for cleaning and eating
