Discreet Orthodontics

Virtually invisible braces

Lingual braces are an orthodontic treatment where the brackets and archwires are placed on the back surface of the teeth. Unlike traditional braces where brackets are placed on the front of teeth, lingual braces are virtually invisible. The treatment suits individuals seeking a discreet, tried and tested orthodontic treatment.

This discreet placement allows you to straighten your teeth with almost completely invisible orthodontics. Working similarly to conventional metal braces, they apply gentle pressure to gradually move the teeth into their desired positions. Many patients find lingual braces discreet and effective.

Teenagers with Braces

The best orthodontic treatment is one that improves confidence

Having worked with many self-conscious patients over decades, we’ve been witness to some remarkable transformations. Initial resistance dissolves when positive results start to emerge. We’ve had many patients share stories of how they transformed more than just their smiles.

We encourage our patients to:

  • Follow your orthodontist's recommendations and maintaining good oral health will ensure successful orthodontic treatment.
  • Appreciate that corrective orthodontic treatment takes time and is worth the effort.
  • Take responsibility by collaborating with your orthodontist, dentist, and parents or carers who have supported them.
  • Be patient! Adhering to an orthodontic treatment plan takes patience and builds resilience.

Lingual Braces Treatment

How do lingual braces work?

Lingual braces work similarly to traditional braces but with a unique placement behind the teeth.

  1. Tailored treatment plan. Your orthodontist will create a customised treatment plan based on the initial positions of your teeth.
  2. Placement of braces. Once your custom lingual braces are ready, your orthodontist will attach the metal brackets to the back surfaces of your teeth. A special dental adhesive to ensure secure placement. Wires are then threaded through the brackets and secured in place.
  3. Adjustments. As your treatment progresses, your orthodontist will periodically adjust the wires of your braces. The adjustments apply the correct pressure to your teeth. With time, the pressure aligns the teeth and straightens your smile.
  4. Retainers. Once your teeth are in their final position, your orthodontic will remove the braces and make a customised retainer. The retainer will work to hold your teeth in the desired position, allowing your gums to adjust to the new position of teeth.

After mapping the initial positions of your teeth, your orthodontist will form a plan of how they want to move forward. Lingual or internal braces work very similarly to traditional braces, gradually moving your teeth into the right position. This is achieved by systematically, over time adjusting the wires that connect the brackets attached to the inside of each tooth. The difference is that these internal braces are discreet letting you smile every step of the way as your teeth are gently moved into alignment.

Dental hygiene

Wearing internal braces is great because they are hardly noticeable. You can feel confident about your smile while your braces are straightening your teeth. Lingual braces (and other braces for that matter) come with some responsibilities. Good dental hygiene is important in preventing a build-up of plaque. Cleaning your teeth and braces regularly and thoroughly will prevent this from occurring.

Type of foods to eat and avoid

Where possible we suggest choosing soft foods, instead of hard or sticky foods. We recommend avoiding any foods that are particularly hard to eat such as hard or chewy candies. To prevent appliance damage, we recommend cutting certain fruits and vegetables into smaller pieces. Your orthodontist will provide you with a full list of foods to avoid. They will also answer any questions you may have about caring for your braces.

Like traditional braces, some patients will experience some discomfort during the start of treatment. The tenderness of teeth and gums will subside in a few days and can be relieved with over-the-counter painkillers.

Some patients may experience some discomfort in the tongue. Over time, you will get used to the braces on your tongue. People may also experience changes in pronouncing certain words and generally pass within a short period.

The cost of treatment will vary from case to case. The duration of treatment and complexity of treatment is unique to every patient. Our orthodontists will provide you with a quote that clearly explains the total cost of treatment. To make treatment affordable, we have a range of interest-free payment plans

The best part of daily life with these internal braces is that they are almost invisible to the naked eye, meaning you can feel confident in your smile while undergoing treatment. In saying this, living with lingual braces (and other braces for that matter) does come with some responsibilities. Good dental hygiene, for example, is very important to prevent a build-up of plaque. Cleaning your teeth and braces regularly and thoroughly will prevent this from occurring.

Furthermore, during the duration of your orthodontic treatment with internal braces you should avoid any food that is particularly hard to eat such as hard or chewy foods (toffee or hard lollies for example) so as to avoid the possibility of damage to your lingual braces. Your MP Orthodontist will provide you with a list of food items to avoid and answer any questions you may have regarding taking care of your internal braces.

At the start of your orthodontic treatment, you may develop a slight lisp until you get used to speaking with braces behind your teeth. This will go away within a short time and with practice. You may also experience a little discomfort until your teeth and tongue adapt to the brackets and wires in your mouth.

The cost of treatment will vary from case to case, as the duration of treatment is unique to every client. If you’d like to know more about our flexible financing policies, head on over to our finance page for more information.

Many orthodontic problems are treatable using lingual braces. Internal hidden braces are a versatile and effective method for straightening teeth. However, there are certain cases where they may not be the best choice. Every case is different and an expert’s opinion is the best way to weigh up all of your options.
