How Long Do Braces Take?

When considering orthodontic treatment, one of the most common questions is, “How long will treatment take?” While the exact time depends on many factors, the average orthodontic treatment time is 18-24 months.

The answer varies according to your individual needs. Understanding the elements that affect the length of treatment can help you choose the most appropriate treatment. In this article, our orthodontists explore what influences treatment length and the average treatment times for braces. They also share their tips to help ensure your orthodontic journey stays on track.

Factors That Affect Treatment Time

Severity of Orthodontic Issues

Your exact treatment duration depends on the complexity of your treatment. Simpler orthodontic corrections such as minor crowding or spacing will naturally take less time. More complex cases will require you to wear braces for longer. These include correcting:

  • Overbite and underbite
  • Crossbite
  • Severe crowding
  • Rotated teeth

Orthodontic Treatment Type

The type of braces you choose plays a role in how they straighten crooked teeth. Each treatment option works at a different pace. The speed of efficiency of treatment are determined by the amount of pressure the orthodontic appliance can apply to your teeth.

  1. Traditional metal braces – Considered the most efficient of all orthodontic treatments. Metal braces can apply the highest level of pressure to guide teeth into their optimal positions. Conventional braces are the benchmark of orthodontic treatment and the most affordable.
  2. Ceramic braces Clear braces offer similar efficiency to metal braces with the advantage of being almost invisible. Ceramic braces are generally more expensive than traditional braces.
  3. Lingual braces – Braces and archwires attached to the rear surface of teeth that offer effective treatment. Lingual braces require smaller brackets and archwires and may require longer treatment duration than conventional braces.
  4. Clear aligners – While technically not braces, Invisalign offers outstanding orthodontic results while offering unmatched discretion. Clear aligners are suitable for a range of orthodontic issues, however, they aren’t suitable for all orthodontic cases.

Discipline and Compliance

Depending on your treatment, your orthodontist may ask you to wear elastics during treatment. They will help you achieve your desired goals and ensure your treatment is as effective as possible.

Oral hygiene also plays a significant role in your treatment. Brushing and flossing daily, along with rinsing after meals will help prevent bacteria buildup. Maintaining your oral health will greatly reduce the chance of treatment disruption due to cavities and gum disease.

Your Age

Orthodontists agree that the best age for orthodontic assessment is between the ages of 7-10. Treatment can commence shortly after but is most common during the teenage years. The main reason for this is the development of facial structures. Younger patients can experience shorter treatment durations due to their facial structures being more responsive to change.

The second best age from braces is adulthood. Adult orthodontic treatment principles are similar to early treatment. They take into consideration the fact that facial structures have stopped growing. This may mean your teeth require a little more time and patience to guide into position.

How to Shorten Your Treatment Duration

To ensure your treatment is as efficient and short as possible, it’s important to follow your orthodontist’s instructions. Wearing elastics, aligners or appliances as prescribed can ensure your teeth move according to your treatment plan. It also avoids unnecessary delays.

Maintaining the health of your teeth and gums during treatment is a close second. Poor oral hygiene can lead to cavities or gum disease which can delay treatment. Attending your scheduled check-ups and adjustments will also make sure your treatment stays on track.

What Happens After Braces?

With your braces removed, wearing your retainer will ensure you will help keep your teeth in their new, aligned position. It will also prevent the need for additional treatment in the event of relapse. Your orthodontist will provide clear instructions on how and when to wear your retainer. This step is just as important as the treatment itself.
