If you’re considering braces, you’re on the cusp of an exciting journey towards a confident smile. Before you dive in, we wanted to share the essential things you should know to make the experience smoother and more rewarding.
Read on and let’s start this orthodontic adventure together!
Braces and orthodontics come in various types and configurations.
Metal braces are a tried and proven orthodontic treatment. Recent advancements have improved comfort and reduced visibility making them the most popular orthodontic treatment.
Ceramic braces are a good option for those seeking discreet orthodontic treatment. Made from ceramic material, they are just as effective as traditional braces. Ceramic braces provide a subtle way to straighten teeth.
Lingual braces take discreet orthodontics to new heights as they are fixed on the rear of the teeth. The unique position results in an almost invisible orthodontic treatment.
Clear aligners are another virtually invisible orthodontic treatment. Clear aligners can straighten teeth without the need for traditional metal braces.
Tip: Speak to our orthodontists to determine the best type for your needs and lifestyle. Some orthodontic treatments have limits on effectiveness for complex orthodontic cases.
When you first get braces, (or any other orthodontics) there might be some discomfort as your teeth and gums adjust. This is completely normal and often well-tolerated by most people.
If you have sensitive teeth and gums, over-the-counter pain medications can provide temporary relief. Soreness, mild pain or dull aching are the most commonly shared sensations. Most patients report that the discomfort subsides in 2-3 days and completely subsides in under a week.
Tip: Use orthodontic wax to reduce discomfort caused by brackets and wires.
Maintaining proper oral hygiene becomes even more critical with braces. Food particles can easily get trapped and lead to staining and tooth decay with all orthodontics.
Our orthodontists recommend brushing after every meal using a soft-bristle toothbrush and fluoride toothpaste. While flossing with braces is a bit trickier is it necessary. Using floss threaders and interdental brushes can make your oral hygiene process easier.
Tip: Investing in a water flosser can make cleaning around braces easier.
Certain foods can cause damage to braces. We recommend you avoid hard, sticky, and chewy foods. These foods can get stuck, bend or break orthodontic components such as brackets and wires. Popcorn, chewing gum, caramel, and hard candies are good examples of foods to avoid.
We recommend opting for softer alternatives such as steamed vegetables, yoghurt and pasta. Cutting harder food into smaller pieces or sticks is a great way to reduce the chance of damaged braces.
To guide your teeth correctly, braces require periodic adjustments. The adjustments occur every 4-6 weeks and are essential for progress. During adjustments, your orthodontist will tighten arch wires, change elastic bands, and ensure your treatment progresses as expected.
Tip: Don’t skip appointments; they play a significant role in achieving your desired results.
If you’re active in sports, you’ll need to take precautions to protect your braces and teeth. Mouthguards are recommended for all sports, especially contact sports. Mouthguards will protect the soft tissues of your mouth in the event of an impact or accident. Custom-fit mouthguards offer the best protection.
Tip: Ask your orthodontist for recommendations on the most suitable mouthguard for you.
For most patients, braces aren’t the end of the journey. To ensure your smile is maintained, your orthodontist is likely to recommend retainers following orthodontic treatment. Your retainers keep your teeth in their newly aligned positions and prevent regression.
Tip: Follow your orthodontist’s instructions diligently to ensure the effectiveness of your retainers.
The length and duration of treatment varies from case to case. Generally speaking, the average braces treatment ranges from 18-24 months. There are examples where treatment lengths can vary and it’s important to remember that no two treatment plans are alike.
Your orthodontist will explain your individual case and a detailed treatment plan. You will also receive information about the various orthodontic treatment options.
Tip: Stay patient and trust the process – the outcome is worth it.
Consider braces an investment in your dental and overall health. Costs vary based on factors like type, treatment duration, and location.
